The Milk Lizards + Onlooker at Northern Guitars
The Milk Lizards are Sunderland’s premier instrumental surf rock trio. Embracing the traditional elements of surf music; clean guitar drenched in reverb on top of a driving rhythm section, The Milk Lizards bring a splash of punk ethos to their no frills take on this often forgotten, niche genre.
No singing means The Milk Lizards are the perfect party band. Playing danceable, feel good tunes that make you think of the beach on a sunny day. If you’ve got a plug socket, The Lizards can rock it. House party, BBQ, wedding, beach party, anywhere! If you’re looking for something slightly off the wall to keep your guests entertained, The Milk Lizards could just be what you’re looking for.
Formed in September 2017 Onlooker is comprised of members from Ankles, First Process Church of Mars, Jimmy Floyd Hassleband and Lifeless, amongst many more.
Based in Teesside they have currently played a handful of shows around the North East and are soon to release their debut self titled EP due out on Sunderland based Serial Bowl Records. Beyond that they are writing and recording a full length release which should be due summer 2019.
Onlooker take influence bands such as Fugazi, Drive Like Jehu, Oh Sees and Eddy Current Suppression Ring among many others. They have developed a garage type sound utilizing everything at their disposal in a short, sharp format. Angry songs in a major key.
Afternoon Americana with B.W.Pike & friends

Special Guest ** Jimi Mack **
We're really pleased to welcome Jimi Mack to Afternoon Americana for his first time playing for us. As always, get down early for a seat! Music starts at 3pm!
Free entry & family friendly.
Experimental folk songwriter Jimi Mack creates music that ‘sounds like Ernest Hemingway & Joni Mitchell’s lovechild’. Hypnotic, baroque fingerpicking and all-consuming baritone vocals warm the bones with tales of darkness, hope & a ferocious lust for life.
Tapping into Celtic traditions and British folk, intertwined with a love of psychedelia, jazz and world music, his music seems to exceed his youth and stretches back into a world of yesteryear lending his performances a timeless quality.
After a robbery incident in his native Belfast, at which he was held at gunpoint, he headed for Spain to hone his craft of guitar playing influenced by the likes of Bert Jansch, Nick Drake & John Martyn, combined with a brooding yet wistful vocal. After 6 months of escaping the sun, picking up bar jobs, ritually practicing & diligently writing, he landed in Nottingham.
His immersion in the Midlands indie & neo-psychedelia scene added a new venom to what was already left-field songwriting. Evocative, tender lyrics tell tales of loss, hope, obsession & the mystic, while his nimble guitar paints euphoric palettes of colour, deftly blending alt-folk with jazz & dark psychedelia, leaving the listener in a trance-like state.
Tireless rambling throughout the UK & Europe to play shows at any given opportunity has seen him rub shoulders with the likes of Ryley Walker, Micah P. Hinson, Night Beats & Torn Sail.
For now Jimi is caught somewhere on a plane between a woodland clearing and a dimly lit city bar. A melting pot of heartfelt folk, psychedelia & jazz.

Tim Holehouse with Malcolm Tent & Richie Smith at Northern Guit
I've been in loads of bands over the years. From the age of 15 with Electric Dissarria to Among The Missing.
So why have I gone solo... Well I have been messing round with songs away from whatever current band I'm in for about 7-8 years now. I guess just to satisfy myself more than anything. I never thought I would release a solo record or tour my stuff. I did the odd acoustic show and released stuff under the guise of The Host Sepia.

Snakerattlers // Honeybuckets
Snakerattlers return to Northern Guitars Cafe Bar on the 22nd of November, bringing the finest of Leeds garage rock with them too.
Snakerattlers is a Dirty Water Records band, comprising of married couple Dan and Naomi. It's a hellbound voyage of trash rock and roll, punk potency and fragments of the oldest, dustiest rockabilly. Those genres combine to make the band's own frenzied and furious take on music, known as Rattlerock. The sound of Snakerattlers is acerbic, ruthless, erratic and uncompromising. The band hails from the deepest, darkest depths of ghost-ridden York, in the heart of North Yorkshire, England.
Since it's inception in Autumn 2016, Snakerattlers have carved themselves a reputation for being an intimidating and highly engrossing live act. Their sound will refresh your beliefs on what a two-piece band can produce, as the sound of Snakerattlers is gargantuan. It has to be experienced in the flesh in order to be completely believed. The band has a relentless tour ethic, and can usually be found in it's natural habitat, devastating a venue almost every weekend of the year.
"Immediate, scary and energising" - Louder Than War
"One of the UK's most dynamic acts" - The 13th Floor
"The punk and rock scenes should keep a close eye on Snakerattlers" - Spill Magazine
Honeybuckets are a new band from Leeds playing warped garage rock, that is slathered in reverb, howls like a crazed werewolf and has powerhouse drumming that keeps everything together. Just. This band walks a very fine line between "genius" and "a reet mess", but Honeybuckets seem to know exactly when to step over that line and when not to. A rare skill to have. If you like your garage rock served with a side order of introspective weirdness, this band are for you.

Dawn of Elysium Sunday Matinee with Echofire
Dawn of Elysium will be playing Northern Guitars on Sunday afternoon, 1st December. Exact times and details TBA.
Dawn of Elysium was born from a pure love for traditional and contemporary dark alternative music. Since humble beginnings in 2012, they have been honing their unique take on progressive gothic rock, whilst paying meticulous attention to songcraft. They have steadily made waves on the northern alternative scene both in the recorded and live arena. In February 2019, they released their self-produced second album “Raven” which received a very warm reception.
Support comes from stablemates Echofire who will be playing a stripped back set of songs as a duo.
Birds and Beasts at Northern Guitars
If David Attenborough was in a band...
Imagine a parallel universe where David Attenborough left the BBC in 1969, moved to California, grew his hair and joined a band. Stories of survival, betrayal and devotion from the animal kingdom inspire their memorable songs. Birds and the Beasts are evolving fast. Catch them while you can and then release them back into the wild.
Stuck in a log cabin during a snowstorm in Germany with only a guitar, the idea of Birds and Beasts was born. The struggles, triumphs and heartbreaks in our own lives are reflected through the prism of the animal kingdom. Our mission is to bring our neat pop music to the ears of animal lovers and music lovers everywhere.
Special Guest ** Scott Wainwright **
Scott is no stranger to Northern Guitars but we're very pleased to have him joining us for an Afternoon Americana session. Scott's a great, engaging performer so you're in for a treat! As always, get down early for a seat!
3 - 5pm. Free entry & family friendly!
Scott Wainwright is a Yorkshire based singer-songwriter and instrumentalist. His music draws from various musical genres including Blues, Gospel, Folk and Hip Hop as well as various ‘World’ musics, such as African, Hawaiian and Indian.
Working with acoustic finger style and bottleneck guitar, harmonica and occasional banjo, Scott draws on his wide love for these types of music and celebrates the joy of pure creativity.
Writing and performing both vocal and instrumental pieces, Scott records regularly and now has a vast and diverse back catalogue of material. He has released numerous albums; ep’s and singles over the years, which have ranged in style from ‘Electric Blues and Hip Hop’ fusions (Every Man Has His Critics) to solo instrumental guitar workouts (What We Cannot Hold). In between these releases there have been regular bouts of ‘Lo-Fi’ folk (All That Glitters is Not Gold) and the odd dabbling as an acoustic balladeer (Whispers from a Kind River), but for now, he has settled on the more experimental country blues sound that can be found on his ‘Strangers Here’ album.
All of Scott’s work evokes a wide range of emotions and feelings from his listeners, as he tackles subjects such as love, life, death, loss, hope and the possibility of being ‘wrong’ about everything.
Throughout the year, Scott plays extensive shows all over the UK, both as a solo performer and as a part of various duos and bands. Every performance is delivered with creativity, passion and a large dose of homespun humour.

Special Guest ** Jason McNiff **
We're very lucky to have London based critically acclaimed Jason Mcniff calling in to play for us while he's up north. This will be a really special show so get down early for a cosy intimate acoustic gig.
Family friendly & Free entry as always! With your weekly host B.W.Pike
Bio & Press links below -
Jason McNiff is a London based Yorkshireman of Irish and Polish descent. He has made five records of what is loosely described as Folk or Americana, yet there is something very British about him. As Time Out attests, “McNiff’s quiet, intimate, fragile-sounding vocals draw you into his world– an almost timeless place, through which he drifts, a romantic loner, a dreamer, at home with the blues.” He is often touted as one of the UK's most overlooked musical treasures - a great songwriter and top-notch finger-style guitarist. His album, April Cruel (Fledg’ling) was nominated for best album in the alt.country category at the Independent Music Awards in the US while a new double CD anthology is out now.
